So I started this LinkedIn discussion in a philanthropy group a week or so back and posed this simple question:<\/p>\n

\u201cCorporate and nonprofit management are very different. There are lessons to share. Wanna share<\/i>?\u201d<\/p>\n

Well, share they did. 47 comments and counting. Evolving into a discussion of how nonprofits and for-profits differ. Or don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

The comments were smart and thoughtful. Very much so.<\/p>\n

But amazingly to me, the general feeling was that there really isn’t much difference at all!<\/p>\n

“Similarities outweigh the differences.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“Very similar.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“They are so much alike that it’s easier to just list the few areas where they’re different.”<\/em><\/p>\n

A good many were focused on metrics and “the bottom line.”\u00a0I think the one that really stood out for me was, \u201cFor nonprofits, the purpose is to efficiently distribute the profits that others have generated and entrusted to the nonprofit.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Really?<\/p>\n

I ran a nonprofit for eight years and not once would I have described the purpose of my endeavor in this way.<\/p>\n

Clearly we’re looking at this differently. And Mark Zuckerberg (the founder of Facebook) has something to teach us here as well.<\/p>\n
