In my work with boards I hear it all the time.<\/p>\n

“I don’t have a great rolodex.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“I only have folks who can give small amounts.”<\/em><\/p>\n

“Why doesn’t the staff do more events with a lower ticket price?”<\/em> (Because events take time and money, maybe?)<\/p>\n

Here’s a story about raising sizeable money in small increments and how a person with no real rolodex can bring big bucks to an organization.\u00a0No kidding.<\/p>\n

It’s also a story about my daughter and about apples not falling far from trees.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

My 17 year old daughter Kit is shy. \u00a0I don’t have a shy bone in my body. \u00a0So when she was offered an internship at the NYC LGBT Center<\/a> and asked to participate on the Crew for Cycle for the Cause, the Northeast AIDS ride<\/a> to raise money for the AIDS work of the NYC LGBT Center, she nearly plotzed (technical term.)<\/p>\n

“I cannot raise $500,” \u00a0she said emphatically.<\/p>\n

YES SHE DID. \u00a0AND THEN SOME.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

We chopped it into bite size pieces. \u00a010 people at $50 a person. \u00a0That’s doable, right? \u00a0We made a list. \u00a0“Oh, I can’t ask them,” she’d say for one reason or another. \u00a0OK, so let’s take them off. \u00a0 It was still a good list.\u00a0She wrote an email – from her heart and in her voice – with a link to her fundraising site.\u00a0And in several days, thanks to her older sister’s contribution, she hit her goal.<\/p>\n

Magically, she transformed into a fierce fundraiser. \u00a0“I can do better than that!” \u00a0“Why didn’t I send to Person A?” \u00a0 “You said you didn’t feel comfortable,” I gently reminded her. \u00a0“Really? \u00a0That’s crazy. \u00a0Let’s ask!” \u00a0 By the time of the weekend of the ride, she had doubled her goal. \u00a0 During the ride itself, she texted me. \u00a0 “Here’s a picture. \u00a0Post it to your Facebook – \u00a0you have friends!” \u00a0“And don’t forget to link to my donation page.” \u00a0By the time the \u00a0Crew returned, she was closing in on $2,000. \u00a0The #2 Crew Fundraiser.<\/p>\n

BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE.<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

Kit was told that a rider that she had recruited had significant giving capacity. \u00a0Kit made sure that this rider had the experience of a lifetime. \u00a0She’d see him, double check that he had eaten, joined him for dinner, and chatted about who she was and why the Center meant something to her. \u00a0Little did she know how much capacity he had.<\/p>\n

Last week she was invited to a dinner with the executive director and development director. \u00a0He made a $50,000 gift to bring the ride’s revenue over $500,000. \u00a0And discussions are underway for a multi-year grant that could mean a minimum of $500,000 over two years for the Center’s Youth program<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Kit nearly danced down the street after dinner. \u00a0She never dances in front of me. \u00a0 The executive director sweetly encouraged Kit to wait until the donor was out of sight before dancing.<\/p>\n

WHAT CAN YOU LEARN FROM KIT?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

1) Fundraising is rewarding.<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0It makes people feel good to give money to causes they care about<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0Fundraising is not transactional. \u00a0It’s about building and sustaining relationships.<\/p>\n

4) Money is program. \u00a0If you want to do important work, you need to be willing to ask.<\/p>\n

So, when was the last time you asked 10 people you know to write a small check to support the organization you work for? \u00a0Or the organization on whose board you serve? \u00a0When was the last time you made a specific ask for a specific amount to a specific person? \u00a0If it was within the last week, hats off to you. \u00a0If not, I’m keeping my hat on.<\/p>\n

Sometimes it’s not about the asking. \u00a0It’s about the relationship. \u00a0I have always said that a check is the organic end result of a powerful story told by a credible messenger. \u00a0You are, as a board or staff member, a credible messenger. \u00a0And you have more access to the stories than anyone else. \u00a0Create connections, even if they are not people in your own rolodex. \u00a0There is no downside, and in Kit’s case, there was $500,000 in upside for a program she cares about. Deeply.<\/p>\n

WHAT DID I LEARN?<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n
