{"id":38700,"date":"2017-08-02T12:51:44","date_gmt":"2017-08-02T16:51:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/?p=38700"},"modified":"2022-07-06T14:01:42","modified_gmt":"2022-07-06T18:01:42","slug":"how-to-be-good-board-member","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/how-to-be-good-board-member\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Be a Great Board Member"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You never know whom you are going to sit next to at a bar mitzvah. I had the great fortune of sitting with an older woman who, for decades, has seen board service as a part of her life\u2019s mission.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, I liked Gloria immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Then, when she told me she never misses my blog posts, I liked her even more.<\/p>\n<p>After we finished <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.reference.com\/browse\/kvelling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kvelling<\/a> about the bar mitzvah boy, we discussed her current nonprofit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI serve on a very challenging board\u201d, Gloria said. She began to describe her board challenges. She was right. Challenging.<\/p>\n<p>When she told me about what she was doing to improve her board, I was impressed.\u00a0Gloria was smart and clearly understood the big problems facing the organization.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An E.D. who saw the board as meddlesome<\/li>\n<li>A board that was in fact meddlesome (well, not really in a <em>bad<\/em> way\u2026 just over-involved in minutiae)<\/li>\n<li>Board members accustomed to playing the role of staff on small, grassroots boards that were now on the board of a larger organization with a staff of 30 and did not adjust their roles accordingly<\/li>\n<li>A board chair that was not leading<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But then Gloria told me a story about something that happened at a recent board meeting, and it hit me. There\u2019s a key problem that Gloria failed to mention.<\/p>\n<p>The problem\u2026 is Gloria.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>GLORIA, THE ENABLING BOARD MEMBER<\/h3>\n<p>When I heard Gloria\u2019s story I knew.<\/p>\n<p>The new Executive Director put her foot down with the board (flag on the field, by the way \u2013 and a post for another day) and told them: \u201cMy staff will not take minutes; that\u2019s the job of the Secretary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Secretary said, \u201cI\u2019m a procrastinator. The minutes will never get out in a timely fashion.\u201d Flag #2.<\/p>\n<p>So guess who volunteered to take the minutes? My bar mitzvah buddy.<\/p>\n<p><em>Gloria was enabling bad behavior.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I asked Gloria why she volunteered to take the minutes. Two key reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I wanted to show the secretary how to do it, that the task wasn\u2019t onerous.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Somebody<\/em><\/strong> had to do it and it would take me no time at all.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do you think the secretary interpreted the offer as a training session?<\/p>\n<p>No way. That secretary breathed a sigh of relief.<\/p>\n<p>Gloria\u2019s intentions were great. She wants to be a good board member&#8230; nay, a GREAT board member. She has all the raw materials. But unless she changes her approach, this board will never get its act together.<\/p>\n<h3>TELLTALE SIGNS OF AN ENABLING BOARD MEMBER<\/h3>\n<p>Here are 3 signs that your strongest board member may be enabling the weaknesses of the rest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Portfolio Without Title<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everyone sees Gloria as the de facto leader of the organization so why should other board members step up?<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Enabler to the Rescue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How could a secretary say he couldn\u2019t take the minutes? That\u2019s his <strong>job!<\/strong> But you can say it when Gloria is in the house.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Regular Use of \u201cI Statements\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Listen closely. I say to Gloria, \u201cThe board needs to bring on new board members who \u2018get\u2019 what it means to be on a governing board with 30 paid staff. Your board needs more experienced members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She opens her response with, \u201c<strong>I have been <\/strong>trying to seek out new board members.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>HOW TO BE A GREAT BOARD MEMBER<\/h3>\n<p>Time for a quick quiz:<\/p>\n<p>Where can Gloria be of the most value?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Board Chair<\/li>\n<li>Stepping off the board<\/li>\n<li>Chair of Nominations Committee<\/li>\n<li>No leadership title of any sort<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>My answer: (3) Chair of the Nominations Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p>First off, enabling board members often <em>were<\/em> board chairs and of course this was true for Gloria. She gave up the title but not the portfolio so she <em>could<\/em> run again and match title and portfolio. But this doesn\u2019t really solve the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Secondly, Gloria is <em>needed <\/em>on this board. In the right role she is an agent of change so she should not step down.<\/p>\n<p>The last option is the current situation. She is powerful and influential but enabling weakness without a particular role.<\/p>\n<p>The place she can have the greatest impact is to chair the Nominations Committee, leading efforts to change the make up of the board. This is a board of 15 members and even a small handful of new people carefully selected for skills, attributes, prior board experience, and leadership potential changes the dynamic completely.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom line: Gloria should find 4 &#8211; 5 people who would be able replacements for her determination, passion, and commitment to this board.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s time for Gloria to be a leader by finding new leaders.<\/p>\n<h3>GLORIA IS A ROCK STAR<\/h3>\n<p>I felt mighty lucky to spend time with her this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>In her decades of nonprofit experience, she has even done board trainings to help them to be more effective. In the right role, Gloria can exert leadership of the lasting variety.<\/p>\n<p>Leadership is a superpower but it must be used carefully and appropriately to be effective.
