{"id":531455,"date":"2015-10-14T12:25:24","date_gmt":"2015-10-14T16:25:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/?p=531455"},"modified":"2022-09-06T09:55:30","modified_gmt":"2022-09-06T13:55:30","slug":"nonprofit-executive-director","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/nonprofit-executive-director\/","title":{"rendered":"A Day In The Life Of An Executive Director"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You know those pharmaceutical commercials that tell you the drug is going to save your life but that side effects include everything from loss of all motor control in from your waist down to brain aneurisms to a you-know-what lasting longer than four hours?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s kinda like being a nonprofit Executive Director, the person in charge.\u00a0Here you are trying to save a teeny-weeny part of the world and the work is exhilarating. You feel lucky beyond measure.\u00a0 It could be a big victory (<a href=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/why-nonprofits-matter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passing a law to lower the NYC speed limit<\/a>) or something smaller (a thank you note from a client).<\/p>\n<p>And yet there are side effects.\u00a0And if you are not careful, these side effects will control your day.\u00a0I see it with clients all the time.\u00a0The job that controls them and not vice versa.<\/p>\n<p>And so this week I offer you a glimpse at a \u201ctypical\u201d day in the life of a nonprofit Executive Director. Or at least I hope it&#8217;s typical since, overall, it&#8217;s a pretty good day.<\/p>\n<p>For comic relief, an object lesson and perhaps a quick look in the mirror.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>DEAR DIARY,<\/h2>\n<p><b>6:00 am<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b>My alarm went off so I could head to the gym. I decided to check my <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">email really quickly. Who was I kidding? There was an email from my board chair sent at 3 FREAKING am. My first bad choice of the day. Will it be the last? Nah. Skipped the gym.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>7:00 am<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b>D<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">og needs to be walked.\u00a0Alex came downstairs looking all fresh and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rested. I don\u2019t look like that at all. She rolled her eyes at me and said, \u2018Sure I would\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">love\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to walk the dog because you do it every morning (NOT).&#8221; Then she laughed. It was a frightening maniacal laugh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>8:15 am<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emails read. Still quiet in the office. Time to make a list. I tried to mix\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it up \u2013 some firefighting, some time to write a board update memo, a list of calls to make. I put an asterisk next to things I cannot leave the office without doing. Helps me <a href=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/manage-your-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">control my day<\/a>. At least a little. Please let some of these things actually happen!!!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><b>9:00 am<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My assistant arrives promptly. Best decision I ever made was to spend <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a bit more money on an assistant who is a partner and not just a \u2018point and shoot\u2019 implementer. He anticipates and partners with me to get things done. Just seeing him at his desk gives me such comfort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>9:15 am<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I actually prepared for the staff meeting with an agenda. Feeling good.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I thought about what might make the meeting worth attending.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>9:30 am<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staff meeting was so good today! No one nodded off! Maybe because we actually had an agenda for once? Everyone shared <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a story about a recent external or internal thing that went really well. I took notes &#8212; great material for major donor pitch. And the staff writing the upcoming e-appeal actually now has some current material. Staff said the meeting felt energizing. Our research said she has significant\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">means. She seemed so interested in our work. I made the ask. She declined politely\u00a0and\u00a0didn&#8217;t even offer to pay for my coffee (Really?) And a parking ticket was waiting for me. Back to the office less than empty handed. Sigh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>11:00 am<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time to get through some phone calls. Some to donors, some to board members,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and others to set up important meetings. The staff meeting gave me some great stories to tell. Folks were impressed. Felt really good. Especially after that coffee meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>12:00 pm<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned to have lunch with clients in the dining hall \u2013 something I do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like NEVER. Something always gets in the way. Two staff members are at my door to share latest crisis. I thought, well so much for that plan but\u00a0then I decided to try the boundary thing. I told them I had 15 minutes and it worked! I would do the boundary thing for a donor lunch but I have always seen the client lunch as kind of a luxury. I really need to get my priorities straight. The lunch recharged my batteries and I found myself looking forward to the afternoon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1:30 pm<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New energy led me to write a really upbeat note to the board. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I introduced them to several of the folks I had lunch with \u2013 their stories and how our organization has literally saved their lives. I couldn\u2019t wait to get notes from board members about the note \u2013 something like \u201csending this to 10 donor prospects right now!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still waiting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2:30 pm<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I took a few minutes to count the emails that came in since this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">morning.\u00a0Why do I EVER think this exercise has any value? I need to just assume that I always have the most and move on. The life of a nonprofit Executive Director.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3:00 pm<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meeting with senior staff to discuss the performance review process. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know this stuff is important but it\u2019s torture\u00a0for me. I know I know. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/my-boss-cant-say-no\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m a pleaser<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but can\u2019t I just tell everyone they are doing great? I just love that. Who needs to breathe? This is\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my not-so-regular meeting with my board chair. Every meeting starts the same way. My board chair says,\u00a0\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what\u2019s up?\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is as much thought as she (or I for that matter) had given it. We acknowledged that we have to change it and agreed to devote\u00a0our next meeting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/nonprofit-board-chair-ceo-relationship-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to create a more meaningful agenda for our meetings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She\u2019s smart and has a lot to add \u2013 structure would be great. I really need a partner at the board level and we both have to work on that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>6:00 pm<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More emails have piled up since I last checked (but who\u2019s counting). I <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">put on my noise reduction headphones (every ED should have a pair) with some favorite music and bear down and plow throw a boatload of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>7:00 pm<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I reviewed the morning to do list. It wasn\u2019t perfect but I got a lot done.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And I touched many aspects of my job in one day. I even accomplished something that wasn\u2019t on my list. So I added it and crossed it out. Silly, I know, but it gave me an even greater sense of accomplishment about the day. Yes, I understand that\u2019s unusual behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>8:30 pm<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home. After dinner,\u00a0Alex suggested this new series on Masterpiece Theatre called <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HomeFires.\u00a0About women\u2019s power and how they made a difference during WWII.\u00a0I made a terrible screaming sound. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can\u2019t even watch people changing the world. I <\/span><\/i><b><i>must<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> watch Dancing With The Stars<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0I fell asleep with my husband just before they awarded the Mirror Ball Trophy to someone I\u2019d never heard of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>10:00 pm<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crawled into bed. Did not check email (I&#8217;ve learned THAT lesson.) As I nodded off I thought about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">my lunch in the dining hall with our clients.
