Every year, I say to my students during the last class, \u201c<em>If nonprofit leaders \u2013 board and staff \u2013 read the same material you did this spring, the nonprofit sector would be infinitely more civil, impactful and effective.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And so here you will find two lists. First, my top five nonprofit leadership books. Then what I\u2019m calling \u201cHonorable Mention.\u201d I asked a few friends and clients to suggest a leadership book to me that was instrumental in helping them to become more effective nonprofit leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you grab only one of these and read it in its entirety, it will be a real investment in your professional growth and will help make the work you do even more remarkable.<\/p>\n<p>And with no further ado\u2026<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>JOAN\u2019S TOP FIVE\u00a0NONPROFIT LEADERSHIP BOOKS YOU MUST READ<\/h2>\n<p><strong><em>1.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0977326403\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0977326403&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=joanmgarry-20&amp;linkId=6W2ALXNHNAUP3L5H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Good to Great and the Social Sectors<\/a><\/em> <\/strong>by Jim Collins<\/p>\n<p>You <em>must<\/em> own this book. It captures in just 40 pages (yes\u2026 40\u2026 so you have <em>no<\/em> excuse not to read it) the recipe for taking a good organization to the next level. There are infographics that will totally stick with you as you go about your day. And I guarantee you \u2013 you will become way more intentional about the hires you make and the board members you invite to join you.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>2.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0143124986\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0143124986&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=joanmgarry-20&amp;linkId=TZSCJBBF6VYXIBHG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Give and Take<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=joanmgarry-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0143124986\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/em> <\/strong>by Adam Grant<\/p>\n<p>This is bigger than just your role as a leader. It\u2019s a book about who you want to be in the world. Grant identifies three kinds of people \u2013 \u2018givers,\u2019 \u2018 takers,\u2019 and \u2018matchers.\u2019 Those who give generously and freely of their time and expertise may not start out as the most successful but they end up at the top. They learn by solving others\u2019 problems and they develop extraordinary social capital. This one is a great staff offsite read or a gift for your senior team or board chair.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>3.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1422103293\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1422103293&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=joanmgarry-20&amp;linkId=3DULIMJPTPY7RVZY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Changing Minds<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=joanmgarry-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1422103293\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/em><\/strong> by Howard Gardner<\/p>\n<p>Gardner is a groundbreaking educator who teaches us that we each have multiple intelligences that lead to different learning styles and a diversity of skills across society. He understands how the mind works and thus what it takes to <strong><em>change a mind<\/em><\/strong>. This is the work of the nonprofit sector \u2013 to move someone to consider something differently so that it matters in a new way to them. Don\u2019t be daunted by how long ago it was written. Trust me \u2013 like all good leadership books should be \u2013\u00a0this one is evergreen.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>4. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0143118447\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0143118447&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=joanmgarry-20&amp;linkId=TCG7F22MGM2UZFD7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Difficult Conversations<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=joanmgarry-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0143118447\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/em><\/strong> by Stone, Patton, and Heen<\/p>\n<p>In my work as a consultant, I find myself contending with conflict. A LOT. Not just with those in opposition to the mission but within organizations themselves. Amongst staff members, between staff and board. This led me to become a certified mediator and also to this book.<\/p>\n<p>First off, many of us are in the business of talking about difficult subjects (can you say <em>Planned Parenthood or any organization that has to do with race, gender, politics, religion, homosexuality \u2013 just to name a few)<\/em>. Secondly, I find oh so frequently that managers simply don\u2019t have tough conversations with staff and are reluctant to hold them accountable in ways that feel difficult.<\/p>\n<p>This book teases out the WHY but then also is very actionable for both the internal and the external difficult conversations far too many folks avoid because of a lack of tools. Tools await you in this book.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>5.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1400064287\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1400064287&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=joanmgarry-20&amp;linkId=RSA2HQMDKH4VEWLV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Made to Stick<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=joanmgarry-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1400064287\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/em><\/strong> by Dan and Chip Heath<strong><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a must read. And an easy one. To me, the biggest takeaway for nonprofits is that leaders love their work and want everyone to love it. So they over-tell and try to cover everything. The Heath Brothers talk about cutting through the clutter and \u201cthe curse of knowledge\u201d \u2013 we know so much about our organizations that we get into detail that listeners don&#8217;t understand. They say that we can\u2019t un-know what we know so we have to transform how we communicate to those who don\u2019t know about our work.<\/p>\n<h2>FIVE MORE LEADERSHIP BOOKS FROM FRIENDS, COLLEAGUES, AND CLIENTS<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A quick survey unearthed five more leadership books you should know about. Heck, some of them are new to ME. I\u2019m ordering them on Amazon right now.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>6. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1591846447\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1591846447&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=joanmgarry-20&amp;linkId=T3GS6W2AJZTGWD7Y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Start with Why<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=joanmgarry-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1591846447\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/em><\/strong> by Simon Sinek<\/p>\n<p>Most leaders start by talking about <strong>what<\/strong> their organization does. But Sinek argues it\u2019s not the <strong>what <\/strong>or the<strong> how <\/strong>that drives great staff candidates, five star board prospects or donors. It\u2019s the <strong>why<\/strong>. Sinek gave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action?language=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a great TED talk<\/a> if you don\u2019t have time to read the full book.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended by Dana Weeks at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.germantownfriends.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>7.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/145552302X\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=145552302X&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=joanmgarry-20&amp;linkId=XOPCZ4HZJ7GNPN2Z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It&#8217;s Your Ship<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=joanmgarry-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=145552302X\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/em><\/strong> by Mike Abrashoff<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve actually never heard of this one, written by the former US Navy captain of the USS Benfold. His practical recipe? Lead by example; listen aggressively; communicate purpose and meaning; create a climate of trust; look for results, not salutes; take calculated risks; go beyond standard procedure; build up your people; generate unity; and improve your people&#8217;s quality of life. Sounds like a great nonprofit leader to me.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended by Kevin Jennings, CEO of the Arcus Foundation.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>8.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0143126563\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0143126563&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=joanmgarry-20&amp;linkId=POU5H2H6S5BPKLEK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Getting Things Done<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=joanmgarry-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0143126563\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/em><\/strong> by David Allen<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest productivity books of the last two decades, I\u2019ve added this to the list. That said, I haven\u2019t read it and feel skeptical simply because the subhead reads: <em>The Art of Stress Free Productivity<\/em>. It may seem unattainable in a nonprofit setting, but my oh my, isn\u2019t it worth a shot?<\/p>\n<p>Recommended by Mark Pelavin at the Union for Reform Judaism.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>9.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/078796378X\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=078796378X&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=joanmgarry-20&amp;linkId=ZYRAAEUOMZZGER3R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How the Way We Talk Can Change the Way We Work<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=joanmgarry-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=078796378X\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/em><\/strong> by Kegan and Lahey<\/p>\n<p>I am so ordering this book, which tackles the inherent human resistance to change. One reader wrote, \u201cMost of the time, when confronted to change, a little voice inside us will tell us why not to change.\u201d The authors write that this voice speaks with 7 tongues. One could even say that these &#8220;voices&#8221; make us immune to change. Luckily, for each of the 7 languages, this book offers a powerful antidote.\u201d I&#8217;m totally intrigued.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended by Parisa Parsa, the E.D. of The Public Conversations Project in Boston.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>10.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0061251321\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=0061251321&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=joanmgarry-20&amp;linkId=5BZYRONXXX4BCM7H\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tribal Leadership: Leveraging Natural Groups to Build a Thriving Organization<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=joanmgarry-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0061251321\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/em><\/strong> by Logan, King, and Fisher-Wright<\/p>\n<p>A 10-year study of 24,000 people in two-dozen organizations revealed that within these organizations exist separate tribes. That\u2019s certainly been my experience. But I&#8217;d be remiss to not mention MY new book. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>11. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Joan-Garrys-Guide-Nonprofit-Leadership\/dp\/1119730481\/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2YF05UZ5UYY3R&amp;dchild=1&amp;keywords=joan+garry%27s+guide+to+nonprofit+leadership+second+edition&amp;qid=1621007914&amp;sprefix=joan+garry%2Caps%2C157&amp;sr=8-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Joan Garry&#8217;s Guide to Nonprofit Leadership: Because Nonprofits Are Messy<\/em><\/strong><\/a> by Joan Garry<\/p>\n<p>I wrote the book I wish I could have read with my board chair in my first ED job at a very messy nonprofit. It&#8217;s written for all nonprofit leaders &#8211; staff and board. It&#8217;s funny, honest, intensely actionable, and based on my own decades of experience working in the nonprofit sector as an Executive Director, a board leader, a volunteer, and a donor.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you find it worthy of being on this list&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2>YOUR TURN<\/h2>\n<p>Thanks to my pals for their suggestions.
