{"id":586383,"date":"2017-04-12T08:45:01","date_gmt":"2017-04-12T12:45:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/?p=586383"},"modified":"2022-06-27T10:29:02","modified_gmt":"2022-06-27T14:29:02","slug":"small-nonprofits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/small-nonprofits\/","title":{"rendered":"Small Nonprofits Move the World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This blog is intended to help nonprofits of all sizes \u2013 big, small, and in between.<\/p>\n<p>But working at a small nonprofit can be especially challenging.<\/p>\n<p>I get a <em>lot<\/em> of emails from people at smaller nonprofits with questions about how to overcome their challenges. Just in the last week, I got emails from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An Executive Director who can\u2019t possibly take a vacation\u00a0\u2013\u00a0ever \u2013 because if she missed a week all the work would <em>literally<\/em> stop<\/li>\n<li>A sole staff member that could have oh-so-much more impact if only there was <em>remotely<\/em> adequate funding<\/li>\n<li>A new ED who feels undermined by the founder and is thinking about quitting but feels conflicted because he cares so deeply about the mission<\/li>\n<li>A senior member of a board that has been spending the nonprofit\u2019s money on a PR contract with the board chair\u2019s wife with sub-par results<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are more. A lot more.<\/p>\n<p>Now, these challenges can happen at bigger nonprofits too. But in many ways, smaller nonprofits have it tougher.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Because larger, well-funded nonprofits have the capacity to get outside help. They can hire consultants, fundraising experts, have their board get expensive ongoing training, spend for professional development opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Small nonprofits? Not a chance.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a huge problem. And I\u2019m committed to doing something about it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I urge you to read all the way through so you can see what I have in mind.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><h2>I WANTED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>In 1997 I entered the nonprofit world and become the Executive Director of GLAAD, an organization that \u2013 at the time \u2013\u00a0was better known than it was funded.<\/p>\n<p>Having come from a high-ranking corporate position at MTV, I was making good money and had a lot of responsibility. But it wasn\u2019t personally fulfilling.<\/p>\n<p>My move from corporate America to nonprofit transformed me. I joke that I did it either because I wanted to avoid a midlife crisis or because I was actually <strong><em>having one.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t matter. What <em>does<\/em> matter is that at age of 39, I now had a job where I was paid to make a difference. Heck, it wasn\u2019t a \u201cjob.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I became a woman with a mission \u2013 to do work with meaning, with purpose.<\/p>\n<p>You know what I mean, don\u2019t you? You know how it feels.<\/p>\n<p><h2>KICKING IT UP A NOTCH<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>This feeling didn\u2019t subside when I ended my tenure at GLAAD \u2013 it just took a different form. I had learned so much as an Executive Director and wanted to share that knowledge with others so I began to consult nonprofit leaders to help with all sorts of challenges.<\/p>\n<p>But that wasn\u2019t helping most of you \u2013\u00a0only those who could afford a consultant, and only a few at a time. I wanted to have a bigger impact.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why this blog exists. And the podcast. It\u2019s why I wrote a book.<\/p>\n<p>All of it helped fill a gap \u2013\u00a0especially from board and staff leaders at smaller nonprofits that need advice, suggestions, a shot in the arm.<\/p>\n<p><h2>BUT A BLOG POST ONLY GOES SO DEEP<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>So many of you who write have small budgets \u2013 very small. Some of you are the only paid staff member, some of your organizations are totally volunteer run.<\/p>\n<p>Your emails are fascinating and inspiring. Fascinating because your challenges are often so very similar to those with budgets 10 times\u2026 100 times\u2026 yours. And inspiring because of how much you do with so little.<\/p>\n<p>Your emails let me know that the blog and podcast make a positive difference for you. I\u2019m so grateful for that and I do not take it lightly.<\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s one thing that\u2019s also very clear\u2026 <strong>it\u2019s just not enough<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>You need more than a 1,000-word blog post or a 30-minute interview with a podcast guest can possibly provide.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the big challenge. I want to help each and every one of you \u2013\u00a0to respond to every email directly \u2013 to overcome your challenges. But that\u2019s impossible.<\/p>\n<p>So I\u2019ve been thinking <em>very<\/em> hard for a long time about what I can do to be of deeper service \u2013\u00a0especially to those with limited resources.<\/p>\n<p>And I have an idea\u2026<\/p>\n<p><h2>HOW TO BUILD A THRIVING NONPROFIT<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Over the coming months, I\u2019ll be focusing a lot on the needs of smaller nonprofits. This will start with a <strong>free online workshop<\/strong> launching in April called \u201c<em>How To Build A Thriving Nonprofit.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you already know you want to register, you can do so here: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thrivingnonprofit.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.thrivingnonprofit.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The goal of the workshop is to leave you with a clear and actionable understanding of what you can do \u2013 what you <em>need<\/em> to do \u2013\u00a0to move your organization closer to \u201cthriving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s just some of what you\u2019ll learn:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A really clear breakdown of exactly what a thriving nonprofit \u2013\u00a0even a small one \u2013 looks like (it\u2019s hard to reach a destination without a clear map)<\/li>\n<li>The 3 most important things for you to focus on first<\/li>\n<li>How to get your board and staff to work together as real partners<\/li>\n<li>How to create a culture of storytelling<\/li>\n<li>And so much more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201c<em><a href=\"http:\/\/thrivingnonprofit.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How To Build a Thriving Nonprofit<\/a>\u201d <\/em>is a workshop designed to help nonprofit leaders like you be as effective as you can possibly be in repairing the world in ways large and small.<\/p>\n<p><h2>HERE ARE THE DETAILS<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p><em><u>When is the workshop?<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The first video will launch on April 17.<\/p>\n<p><em><u>Who is the workshop for?<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p>I have very specifically designed it with smaller nonprofits in mind. But certainly nonprofit leaders from any sized nonprofit will get a lot out of it and are welcome to participate.<\/p>\n<p>The audience for the workshop is not just staff leaders but board leaders as well. I believe strongly that the best nonprofits are like twin-engine jets and that the board chair and the Executive Director need to work together to ensure that the plane is stable and can reach its destination.<\/p>\n<p><em><u>I\u2019m REALLY busy. How much time will be required?<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p>As a nonprofit leader, you\u2019re especially busy. I get it. So I designed the workshop to be super valuable without taking up too much time. I will release a new video every couple of days \u2013 four in total \u2013\u00a0and each one will be pretty short but packed tight with tremendous value.<\/p>\n<p>You can watch the video \u201con demand\u201d whenever it makes sense for you. Over an afternoon coffee\u2026 in the evening on your phone\u2026. Maybe you\u2019ll even consider making viewing a part of a staff meeting and watch it as a team.<\/p>\n<p><em><u>Will there be an opportunity to ask Joan questions during the workshop?<\/u><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yes!
