{"id":586478,"date":"2017-05-10T18:34:31","date_gmt":"2017-05-10T22:34:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/?p=586478"},"modified":"2022-06-27T10:29:01","modified_gmt":"2022-06-27T14:29:01","slug":"get-along","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/get-along\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Can\u2019t We All Get Along?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>While I generally like sports, I don\u2019t watch much basketball. Maybe the NCAA college tournament as it nears the end. Baseball is my game. Always has been.<\/p>\n<p>My dad was a Little League coach and I was his dugout sidekick. And then I went to school at Fordham in the Bronx, a stone\u2019s throw from Yankee Stadium. I know a lot about the game. And about statistics.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s basketball that actually captures my favorite statistic. <em>The<\/em> <em>assist.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Simply put, you get statistical credit for setting the shot up, for making sure the ball gets to the open player who is free to make the shot.<\/p>\n<p>Why don\u2019t nonprofit leaders incorporate this mindset into their work? After all, most of you are in the <strong><em>business<\/em><\/strong> of assisting.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Assisting\u2019 is actually a rather big theme in my <strong><em>How To Build A Thriving Nonprofit<\/em><\/strong> online workshop.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop just started, it\u2019s free, and it\u2019s intended to help any leader at a nonprofit \u2013 board or staff \u2013\u00a0that can use an assist or two. It would be wonderful if you\u2019d participate.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u00a0are just a couple of the comments people have left so far about the workshop. There are a whole lot more like these:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-586485\" src=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screenshot-2017-05-10-17.57.24.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"767\" height=\"117\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-586486\" src=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/Screenshot-2017-05-10-17.55.23.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"777\" height=\"155\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;d like to join us,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thrivingnonprofit.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">click here<\/a> to register for the workshop.<\/p>\n<p>Connected to the workshop, I also started a Facebook group. And it\u2019s been AMAZING! The assist percentage in the group is OFF THE CHARTS.<\/p>\n<p>An ED posted her new logo and 25 folks (and growing) offered terrific feedback \u2013 about the logo itself, about getting board buy in.<\/p>\n<p>Another leader asked, \u201cWhen is it ok to say \u2018no\u2019 to your board?\u201d You can\u2019t imagine the quantity and quality of <em>those <\/em>responses.<\/p>\n<p>So let\u2019s talk about what happens to your organization when you start to emphasize the \u2018assist\u2019. And I\u2019m thinking about two kinds of assists\u2026 1) inside your organization and 2) within your sector or community.<\/p>\n<p>But first, let\u2019s discuss the five kinds of folks you meet a nonprofits.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><h2>THE FIVE KINDS OF FOLKS YOU MEET AT NONPROFITS<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>During my time as the Executive Director of GLAAD, I used to advocate against stereotypes. That said, I know they sometimes exist for a reason.<\/p>\n<p>So at the risk of stereotyping, here are five kinds of folks you\u2019ll meet in most \u201cteams\u201d at nonprofits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Bug Crusher<\/strong>. The smartest person in the room who can\u2019t abide anything less than brilliance from his \u2018teammates.\u2019 If he hears it, colleague is crushed like a bug.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Ducker<\/strong>. I worked with a colleague like this in my for-profit life. I used to joke that he always needed to use the rest room when a tough decision had to be made. He was clearly washing his hands of the whole thing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Diva<\/strong>. She requires a lot of maintenance. And her roller board is filled with drama.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The \u2018A\u2019 Student<\/strong>. Meets deadlines, writes a first rate \u2018book report\u2019 and doesn\u2019t know how to market his success and expects people to just <em>know<\/em>. Never really feels appreciated.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Conflict Averse Boss<\/strong>. That would be the person at the head of the table managing the three-ring circus. Or should I say NOT managing it. He ignores the dynamics and focuses only on outcomes. And would rather have a cavity filled than be in the room.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Think for a moment. How well does each type handle assists?<\/p>\n<p><h2>HOW TO ENCOURAGE MORE ASSISTS WITHIN YOUR ORGANIZATION<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>So here\u2019s an idea. What if we actually measured performance based on <em>scoring<\/em> AND <em>assists.<\/em> What if salary was tied to this?<\/p>\n<p>What I mean is, how might each of the characters above change if we gave more weight to personal behaviors and attributes during performance reviews, rather than entirely focusing on outcomes?<\/p>\n<p>Here are some ideas for what you might do:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Measure response time to emails or phone calls from colleagues.<\/li>\n<li>Flesh out annual goals to include how your colleagues can (or need to) <strong><em>assist<\/em><\/strong> in your department\u2019s success.<\/li>\n<li>Invite other department heads to YOUR department retreat.<\/li>\n<li>Require a monthly \u2018team\u2019 meeting where a member brings a problem to the table <strong>\u2013 <\/strong>the rest of the team \u201cassists\u201d (and the ED takes notes).<\/li>\n<li>Have a real conversation at a retreat about each person\u2019s areas for development. The facilitator can then identify if these areas of weakness are actually areas of strength for other members of the group. Secure commitments and hold people accountable.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unlike other performance metrics, these might be more anecdotal. And so the \u201cboss\u201d needs to keep a Google Doc for each person (or an old fashioned file will do). Toss notes in every time you see (or feel) an assist. Pretend you are a statistician. Can\u2019t measure what you don\u2019t keep track of.<\/p>\n<p>Create a culture where assists are valued and measured and I believe that this just might be a key antidote to a dysfunctional \u2018team\u2019 that is not really a team at all.<\/p>\n<p><h2>STOP WITH THE \u201cCOMPETITION\u201d ALREADY!<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes I think nonprofit leaders like to say they are all alone, that their jobs are lonely. Board chairs will literally tell me, \u201cI just do what I think is best \u2013 it\u2019s not like there is a rule book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well there are resources and the best ones are not <em>usually<\/em> books.<\/p>\n<p>They are colleagues. Other leaders in your community. People who work in your sector.<\/p>\n<p>Friends, neighbors, co-workers who also serve on boards.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Why don\u2019t you all talk to one another???<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s the deal here? You see them as competition for volunteers or dollars? Please just stop it.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re shooting yourself in the foot.<\/p>\n<p>My friends at the Arcus Foundation are generous and smart. They are seeding \u201cExecutive Director Groups\u201d in a few key cities around the country. They\u2019re doing this because they understand you\u2019re a lot more likely to \u201cscore\u201d when there\u2019s somebody there to give you an \u201cassist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>PLEASE. I beg you to remove the word \u201ccompetition\u201d from your vocabulary \u2013 at least when you\u2019re talking about other nonprofits.<\/p>\n<p><h2>WHY THIS SHOULD MATTER TO YOU<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Each of you reading this post is generous. You must be. It\u2019s why you raised your hand for nonprofit leadership.<\/p>\n<p>You feel compelled to give, to help, to serve \u2013 to put your skills to work to solve a societal problem, to find a cure, to bring families together, to get people back on their feet, to honor the legacy of someone you lost.<\/p>\n<p>Squandering resources is something the nonprofit sector can ill afford. And some of the most valuable resources you have as a leader are <strong><em>colleagues.<\/em><\/strong> At a staff meeting, in your sector, in your community.<\/p>\n<p>I could argue that you came out of the stands and onto the court because you wanted to be of service, you wanted to help. You wanted to <strong><em>assist.<\/em><\/strong> It is part of your nature and it feeds you in some important ways.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that as you stroll through the office today. Think about it and pick up the phone and make a coffee date with the board chair of another organization in town. Instead of just \u201c<em>How\u2019s it going?\u201d<\/em> try on the phrase, <em>\u201cNeed any help with anything?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You chose to play on this nonprofit court because you are generous. Please remember to be generous with each other.<\/p>\n<p><h2>LET&#8217;S WORK TOGETHER<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>I believe great\u00a0leadership at a nonprofit is like a twin-engine jet with co-pilots \u2013 the board and staff leaders \u2013 who work together and fly the plane in the same direction.
