What\u2019s the best career advice you ever got? I really want to know!<\/p>\n

It turns out I have a pretty mixed track record when it comes to giving career advice. A story for another day.<\/p>\n

But you know who gives the best career advice?<\/p>\n

My wife.<\/p>\n

The advice she once gave me is a perfect example.<\/p>\n

There I was at Showtime. Seemingly happy and successful and yet there was something gnawing at me. But I was clueless.<\/p>\n

Until my wife offered the best career advice I have ever gotten.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou would be a great nonprofit executive director.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Not something I had ever considered but she made a clear case. \u201cYou have natural leadership ability, innate management ability, and you care really deeply about gay rights.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

She could not have been more spot on. A career move that was personally and professionally transformative.<\/p>\n

It also began my nonprofit career.<\/p>\n

So back to my original question. What\u2019s the best career advice you ever got?<\/p>\n

I decided to ask some real experts.<\/p>\n

You might know I created a free Facebook group for board and staff leaders called Your Thriving Nonprofit<\/em><\/a> – <\/em>you should totally join us there if you haven’t already. This group \u2013 presently more than 30,000 strong \u2013 is definitely thriving!<\/p>\n

THE BEST ADVICE COMES FROM THE TRENCHES<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n

These are some serious pearls of wisdom offered by nonprofit board and staff leaders. There were so many to choose from. The ones below just really spoke to me. And I believe they will speak to you as well.<\/p>\n

ON COMMUNICATION<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cKeep speaking your vision until you hear it repeated back to you. You may feel like a broken record but keep communicating that vision until your team, your board, your donor – start speaking it for you. Then you will know that they have made that vision their own.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAssume positive intent (especially when dealing with email \/ text messages and whenever dealing with volunteers.)\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
