{"id":595631,"date":"2022-12-01T16:14:49","date_gmt":"2022-12-01T21:14:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/?p=595631"},"modified":"2024-07-05T09:54:12","modified_gmt":"2024-07-05T13:54:12","slug":"board-chair-attributes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/board-chair-attributes\/","title":{"rendered":"The 8 Attributes of an Outstanding Board Chair"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When the pandemic was winding down, for the first time in two and a half years, I boarded a plane and gave a keynote speech at an in-person conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not gonna lie \u2014 I was kind of cranky about it at first. It\u2019s been a while since I had to wear something presentable from the waist down, and, unsurprisingly, not much fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But I love <a href=\"https:\/\/firsttee.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this organization<\/a> (The First Tee), and I\u2019ve worked with them in the past. Plus, a whole posse of them are members of our online community, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nonprofitleadershiplab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nonprofit Leadership Lab<\/a>\u2026 so off to Dallas I went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I ended up totally loving it! And this actually makes perfect sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies show that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3150158\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">people who gather in community are healthier physically and emotionally<\/a>. Further, studies point to evidence that kindred spirits gathered in community generate new ideas. They innovate. They become agents of change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the keynote, I led an interactive workshop on the relationship between the board chair and the executive director and my belief that it is the <a href=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/best-sign-healthy-nonprofit\/\">single most important indicator of a healthy nonprofit<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And because my workshops are more offbeat than others, I decided to play a little version of Family Feud. I have always thought it would be great fun to be a game show host.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wanna play along? Let&#8217;s go!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>The top 8 answers are on the board\u2026 here\u2019s the question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>Name something that every nonprofit organization needs in a board chair\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ready-for-nbsp-board-chair-family-feud-survey-says\"><strong><strong>READY FOR&nbsp;BOARD CHAIR FAMILY FEUD? SURVEY SAYS\u2026<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In my mind, my contestants missed the top 8 answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, that\u2019s not entirely true. They didn\u2019t miss the answers conceptually. Their answers were actually very good. Words like collaborative, encouraging, engaged, available, motivated came up and were added to our flip chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But as the \u201chost\u201d of Board Chair Family Feud, the answers at the top of MY list were a bit more specific, clear, and a bit pointed. Ready? It\u2019s my turn to show you what <em>my<\/em> survey says!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-show-me-passion-for-the-mission\"><strong>SHOW ME: \u201c<em>PASSION FOR THE MISSION!\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bells begin to ring and we find that answer right there in the #2 spot.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/1-800x300.png\" alt=\"Board Chair Family Feud board with Passion in the second slot.\" class=\"wp-image-595632\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Wow!!! #2. Aren\u2019t you dying to know the #1 answer? So here\u2019s why this shows up as #2. Look at every board prospect like a hot water heater with a pilot light. The pilot light is a metaphor for their passion for the mission of YOUR organization, YOUR cause. You need to be looking for a big bright pilot light. The brighter the light, the greater the enthusiasm to be an ambassador, a storyteller, and yes, (GASP!) a fundraiser.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, the greater the motivation to engage the rest of the board. AND the greater the fortitude when it comes to doing hard things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ok-show-me-does-not-roll-eyes-at-stupid-comments\"><strong>OK, SHOW ME: <em>&#8220;DOES NOT ROLL EYES AT STUPID COMMENTS\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bells ring again!!!!!! <em>That one is right there at #8: <\/em>\u201c<em>No eye-rolling\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/2-800x300.png\" alt=\"Board Chair Family Feud board with No Eye Rolling in the eighth slot.\" class=\"wp-image-595633\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nonprofitleadershiplab.com\/free\/fixmyboard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A high-functioning board<\/a> is filled with diverse volunteers who care about the organization and want to come up with good ideas. Sometimes (and it\u2019s inevitable) these ideas are not very good. Actually, let\u2019s just say it \u2014 some of them are <em>stupid<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve all heard them around the board table. You want a board chair that will honor what is behind the stupid comment with a response like, \u201cI appreciate your innovative thinking \u2014 but, I\u2019m not totally sure that aligns with our strategic priorities. Why don\u2019t E.D. and I take that idea offline and circle back to you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-i-m-on-a-roll-nbsp-let-s-try-crowd-is-now-cheering-wildly-organized\"><strong>I\u2019M ON A ROLL \u2014&nbsp; LET\u2019S TRY (crowd is now cheering wildly): <em>&#8220;ORGANIZED?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The host hesitates. Will I get credit for what is behind #6? YES, I\u2019m told.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bells start to ring as this appears on the board:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Reliable. Shows up for meetings with E.D. \/ Respectful of time at board meetings\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/3-800x300.png\" alt=\"Board Chair Family Feud board with Reliable \/ Shows Up in the sixth slot.\" class=\"wp-image-595634\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Yay! I get credit for that one. A great board chair respects YOUR time. You don\u2019t have to turn into a pretzel to accommodate them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a great board chair knows better than to pick up the phone while at gate 56 at JFK terminal 6 to ask \u201cWassup?\u201d stopping the E.D. smack in the middle of their job so that the board chair gets credit for being communicative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-oh-oh-i-have-one-checks-ego-at-the-door\"><strong>OH OH. I HAVE ONE. \u201cCHECKS EGO AT THE DOOR\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Bingo. Right there at #4. \u201c<em>Humble confidence\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Family-Feud-Answers-1200-\u00d7-630-px-800x300.jpg\" alt=\"Board Chair Family Feud board with Humble Confidence in the fourth slot.\" class=\"wp-image-595650\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey might also have said: \u201c<em>Joined board for the right reason.<\/em>\u201d It might also have said \u201c<em>Right-Sized Ego<\/em>\u201d. Folks with big egos, who ran for board chair so they could add to their CV? They make poor thought partners. They often think they know best.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We don\u2019t want someone who thinks they know all the answers but rather someone who asks really good questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shall-we-keep-going-oh-yes-let-s-try-invests-in-understanding-the-job\"><strong>SHALL WE KEEP GOING? OH YES, LET\u2019S TRY: \u201cINVESTS IN UNDERSTANDING THE JOB\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Y<em>ES!!!!! #3. Works to be good at it!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/5-800x300.png\" alt=\"Board Chair Family Feud board with Works To Be Good At It in the third slot.\" class=\"wp-image-595636\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Being a board chair is a hard and important job. If you tell your new board chair that and ask if they would like some resources and they jump at the chance to <a href=\"https:\/\/nonprofitleadershiplab.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">actually learn about how to do this important job well<\/a>, that is a very good sign indeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three slots left on the board (including #1). There\u2019s a whole lot of nail-biting going on\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-about-great-partner\"><strong>HOW ABOUT, \u201cGREAT PARTNER?\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/6-800x300.png\" alt=\"Board Chair Family Feud board with Values Partnership in the seventh slot.\" class=\"wp-image-595637\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, the bells ring as #7 is revealed on the board. Those of you who read my blog or listen to my podcast know that I refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/roles-board-chair-executive-director\/\">board chair and the Executive Director as co-pilots in a twin-engine jet<\/a>. If I am boarding a plane, I want to believe that I have a real partnership in that cockpit \u2014 mutual respect, trust, the ability to give and receive feedback\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t get that on day one, but you need a chair who values that and works to build that with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now we have just two slots left to reveal\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-hmmmm-how-about-wants-to-be-of-service\"><strong>HMMMM\u2026 HOW ABOUT: \u201cWANTS TO BE OF SERVICE\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Checking with the judge on this one. And yes, the bells ring. And we see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cUnderstands that service is a privilege\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/7-800x300.png\" alt=\"Board Chair Family Feud board with Understands That Service Is A Privilege in the fifth slot.\" class=\"wp-image-595638\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Being a board chair is not just a volunteer gig. You are a partner with the E.D. in doing some of the most important work there is: solving some of the world\u2019s biggest problems, making someone\u2019s day just a little brighter, and offering a glimmer of hope to someone in need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To have the opportunity to be a leader in such an organization is a responsibility that should be treated with a certain amount of reverence. And it should feel like a gift. A privilege.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what the heck is the #1 answer? Stumped?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-it-s-time-for-the-big-reveal-the-1-answer-is\"><strong>IT\u2019S TIME FOR THE BIG REVEAL. THE #1 ANSWER IS\u2026<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Wants the job.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/8-800x300.png\" alt=\"Board Chair Family Feud board with Wants The Job in the first slot.\" class=\"wp-image-595639\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the #1 answer on my Family Feud board for a reason. I interact with thousands of nonprofits every single day inside the <a href=\"https:\/\/nonprofitleadershiplab.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nonprofit Leadership Lab<\/a>. I joke that many board chairs became board chairs because they went to the restroom during the vote and returned to find that they had been elected unanimously.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I worked with a new organization and sat at the board table and said ok, we need a chair.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I described the role. No takers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I said, \u201cI\u2019m not in a hurry \u2014 you are not a board until you have a chair, a leader. Let\u2019s talk about the job and have a real conversation about the traits needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We didn\u2019t play Family Feud, but we got these traits on the table. As it turned out, all roads led to two individuals that agreed to co-chair the board. Then, I let them all go home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The co-chair model can work well, and in this case, it ended up working out very well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-let-s-review-the-list-up-on-the-board\"><strong>LET\u2019S REVIEW THE LIST UP ON THE BOARD<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wants the job<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Passion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Works to be good at it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Humble confidence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understands that service is a privilege<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reliable \/ shows up<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Values partnership<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No eye rolling<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-now-what\"><strong>NOW WHAT?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It may be hard to imagine having fun at a Board Governance meeting, but let\u2019s give it a go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you are getting ready to think about the leadership pipeline on your board, set the table for the conversation with a game of Family Feud and have folks come up with traits. Use this blog post to spark conversation about what <em>really<\/em> matters and let these eight traits be the foundation or the lens by which you evaluate prospective board members, committee chairs, and board leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Move away from, \u201c<em>We really need a candlestick maker<\/em>\u201d or worse yet, \u201c<em>We just need more women,<\/em>\u201d and start talking about the traits that really matter as the lens by which you evaluate everyone in your nonprofit board\u2019s leadership pipeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Want to learn from a growing community of nonprofit leaders and get exclusive access to content from a variety of experts?
