You salivate over the brochure and place your order.\u00a0 It\u2019s usually a very big order. I think maybe Weight Watchers owns stock in the cookie manufacturer. You are delighted.\u00a0 So is the cute little girl in the green outfit with the sash.<\/p>\n<p>The girl smiles an earnest smile and walks away. You shut the door, dreaming of Samoas.\u00a0 Just one quick question: except for the possibility of the cost of the uniforms and maybe the cookies themselves\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong><i>Do you have any idea how the Girl Scouts will spend your money?<\/i><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m gonna go with \u2018no\u2019 on that one.\u00a0 And how about this question: \u00a0If the Girl Scouts came a callin&#8217; without cookies, would you make a donation? \u00a0I think I know the answer to that one, too.<\/p>\n<p>You see, for decades, we\u2019ve all been trained.\u00a0 Make a donation and get a box of cookies. This is unhealthy. And I\u2019m not just talking about the sweets. It might just be better for the company to fund raise the <a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.haloxyl.net\"><span style=\"text-decoration: none; color: #222;\">haloxyl<\/span><\/a> skin care product.<\/p>\n<p>They have trained us all into believing that people won\u2019t give to causes unless there are treats.<\/p>\n<p>But guess what? You don\u2019t need treats to be a successful fundraiser!<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what you DO need!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>First, let me tell you some other things, besides cookies, that you don\u2019t need.<\/p>\n<h2><b>WHAT YOU DON\u2019T NEED FOR SUCCESSFUL FUNDRAISING<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The exact number of &#8220;free&#8221; tickets he\/she will get to the Super Ball if they give $X.<\/li>\n<li>The exact number of times the donor\u2019s name will be mentioned on the event screen.<\/li>\n<li>The list of celebrities confirmed to attend and the celebrity that will be assigned to the donor\u2019s table.<\/li>\n<li>The last really tangible thing our organization did that I can tell them about so I can be sure they know they are getting something for their money.<\/li>\n<li>A list of every single objection question they could raise and really good answers for each.<\/li>\n<li>A box of Thin Mints.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>OK, so what do you actually need?<\/p>\n<h2><b>TEN THINGS YOU DO NEED FOR AN EFFECTIVE FUNDRAISING ASK<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0 <b>Donor research in bullet point form<\/b>. Not her\/his giving history to <i>your<\/i> organization, but political giving, alma mater, etc.\u00a0 You need to have philanthropic context.<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0 <b>Notes from Raiser\u2019s Edge or your donor database. <\/b>(Or the scraps of paper in a folder somewhere on the Development director\u2019s desk) from the organization\u2019s last contact with this donor.\u00a0 Anything to know about his family, his dog, his ailing mom?<\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0\u00a0 <b>The donor\u2019s giving history to <i>your<\/i> organization.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>4)\u00a0\u00a0 <b>The current budget for the organization.<\/b>\u00a0 Donors like to know that you have some basic information about money and some context for the gift they are being asked for.<\/p>\n<p>5)\u00a0\u00a0 <b>A suggested ask amount.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>These first five items should come from your staff.\u00a0 There is absolutely no reason this information should be on more than one page. It should be given to you several days before the meeting and you should be able to read it en route to the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>What else?\u00a0 Well, everything else you need you already have.\u00a0 Just like those old ruby slippers.<\/p>\n<p>6)\u00a0\u00a0 <b>One story about your motivation<\/b>. Why did you join the board and what ignited your passion about the organization.\u00a0\u00a0 Told eloquently, articulately and persuasively.\u00a0 Your enthusiasm should feel contagious.\u00a0\u00a0 It could be about the staff, a client, a particular program.\u00a0 It could be a personal connection between the organization and you.<\/p>\n<p>7)\u00a0\u00a0 <b>One story about the work<\/b>.\u00a0 It should be one you can easily tell and easily remember.\u00a0 It should be very sticky.<\/p>\n<p>8)\u00a0\u00a0 <b>One story about the staff and leadership<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>9)\u00a0\u00a0 <b>Your own commentary about the organization\u2019s place in the larger movement<\/b>.\u00a0 What role is your organization playing in moving the larger set of issues forward?\u00a0 Be able to describe how your organization works with others (donors love this)<\/p>\n<p>10)\u00a0\u00a0<b>A small index card with ten words written clearly on it<\/b>.\u00a0 At some point during your meeting, excuse yourself and hit the rest room.\u00a0 Read the card.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what it says:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><i>My love for this organization trumps my fear of asking.<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Then go back out there and get to work.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/joangarry.com\/worst-case-scenarios-asking-for-money\/\">What\u2019s the worst thing that can happen?\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Girl Scout syndrome happens to the best of us.\u00a0 One of my biggest donors called on the eve of our biggest fundraiser.\u00a0 She called four times in one day to find out what celebrity would be at her table.\u00a0 She literally said, \u201cJoan, you know that\u2019s why I\u2019m a big donor to your organization.\u00a0 I love celebrities.\u201d I went right back at her.\u00a0 \u201cReally?\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know that.\u00a0 I thought you were so generous because you believe so deeply in the mission of our organization and the power of the work we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She continued to give for years.\u00a0 Remember. It ain\u2019t about the cookies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Don&#8217;t fundraise like a Girl Scout!  These earnest well meaning young ladies have trained us to believe that people only donate if there are treats. You do not. I repeat. You do not need treats. Here&#8217;s what you do need.
